WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WORKDAY LOOK LIKE?
It starts with school traffic in the morning, I drive to several schools. I then take a coffee break at the bus depot and before lunch I work as a jack of all trades. I clean and make sure that the bus is in order. After lunch, in the afternoon, I drive the school kids home. Sometimes I drive scheduled routes and charter services, and then my days look entirely different.

Linda, a bus driver in Närpes.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WORKDAY LOOK LIKE?
I usually drive scheduled bus routes that run between Kokkola-Jakobstad-Vaasa. My workday starts at 5.35 AM and the bus departs from the bus station in Jakobstad at 5.50 towards Kokkola. At 7.00 AM I turn south toward Vaasa and at 12.25 PM we change drivers in Jakobstad. If you're driving the scheduled traffic routes in the evening, you work 12.25-21.15. I see plenty of regulars while driving the scheduled routes, and that's fun.

Ivar, bus driver in Jakobstad
DO YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO FIX THINGS?
It's an advantage to be handy, but I'm not very good at fixing things myself and it's not a requirement for the profession. We have mechanics who make sure the buses are serviced and if something unexpected happens while on a drive, you can call them for help. When I prepare the bus for departure, I always check minor things such as the oil level.

DO YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO FIX THINGS?
No, you don't, but you drive the bus yourself every morning, check the oil level and coolant, and also the tires. It's good to have analytical skills so you can solve problems by phone with the mechanics if something happens. At Ingsva, the bus maintenance is excellent and the buses are new, so it's extremely rare that anything happens to the bus.

Ivar, bus driver in Jakobstad
HOW LONG ARE THE WORK DAYS?
I usually work from 6.30-16.30, the time can vary by half an hour here or there depending on which routes I have. One day a week I have a long day when I drive scheduled traffic, and sometimes I also work on weekends.

Linda, a bus driver in Närpes.
HOW LONG ARE THE WORK DAYS?
A full-time bus driver works 80 hours in a two-week period. At Ingsva, you can choose to work full-time, part-time, or as a trainee. We try to take into account everyone's individual needs and lifestyles and adjust the work hours accordingly.

Mikael, HR manager.
WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU NEED AS A BUS DRIVER?

DO YOU EVER SEE YOUR COLLEAGUES?
I see my colleagues every day. Naturally, I'm alone when I drive, but I see my colleagues daily during the breaks and when we work together at the depot.

Linda, a bus driver in Närpes.
DO YOU EVER SEE YOUR COLLEAGUES?
The vast majority meet their colleagues daily. The bus drivers work in teams with traffic management and have a great opportunity to be involved and influence our business by giving suggestions for improvements during breaks and short meetings where we discuss improvements.

Mikael, HR-chef
IS IT DIFFICULT TO DRIVE A BUS?
I have always been fascinated by large vehicles, so making the jump from healthcare to bus driver was no problem for me. When driving large vehicles, you need to think in a different way when driving a passenger car. I don't think driving a bus is difficult at all - anyone can learn it!

Linda, a bus driver in Närpes.
IS IT DIFFICULT TO DRIVE A BUS?
With large, heavy, and long vehicles, you need to keep an eye on where you have the overhang, for instance, but driving a bus is not difficult. The buses are stable on the road, have automatic transmissions, and are easy to manoeuvre.

Ivar, bus driver in Jakobstad
DO YOU HAVE ANY COFFEE BREAKS?
Yes, you have coffee breaks! In Närpes, where I work, we drink coffee at the depot with all the drivers, mechanics, and office staff every day. If you are out on a drive further away, you drink coffee at gas stations during the breaks.

Linda, a bus driver in Närpes.
DO YOU HAVE ANY COFFEE BREAKS?
Yes, more than enough!
Ivar, bus driver in Jakobstad.

We are careful that the drivers keep their driving and rest times, and these also include coffee and lunch breaks.
